An Overview of Germany’s Electromobility
Mobility Charts is a development of Christopher Hecht Jan Figgener, und Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer from the institutes ISEA and PGS of RWTH Aachen University. Electromobility is a central element of the traffic transformation in Germany. The sales numbers of electric cars have been increasing exponentially for several years and now have a substantial market share. In combination with photovoltaic systems, battery storage and other smart home applications, a sector coupling of transport and power supply is possible. The ISEA Institute at RWTH Aachen University continuously analyses current sales figures and uses them to estimate important parameters such as number, battery capacity and connections of the current vehicle fleet. An overview of key values can be found on this page.

The chart shows the stock of passenger cars in recent years by type.
The number of plug-in hybrids (PHEV, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) and fully battery electric vehicles (BEV, battery electric vehicles) sold each year was the same. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are still a niche technology, and the initially strong relative growth has not continued.
For this chart, the stock figures are determined at the beginning of each quartal. Thus it is possible that this graphic is less up-to-date than the other ones.

Electric passenger cars are now by far the largest user of batteries. The graph above shows the gross capacity of all electric cars in Germany. With technologies such as vehicle-to-grid or vehicle-to-home, this capacity can be used to stabilise the electricity grid in the future.

The above graph represents the fast-charging capacity of electric passenger cars in Germany. This value represents a theoretical quantity, as only a fraction of the vehicles are connected to the grid at any one time.
Since the charging capacity is not recorded centrally by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the value represents an estimate based on the available model code of the vehicles and is subject to the stated uncertainty. The reason for the range of values increasing over the course of the year is the less precise subdivision of the monthly updates. Please also note that the more accurate inventory data is typically published later in the year, which is why values sometimes have to be corrected retrospectively.

This graph shows the AC charging capacity of electric cars in Germany. This value also represents a theoretical quantity because vehicles are often not connected or are connected but already fully charged. Overall, the AC charging power is only a small part of the DC charging power, because with this type of charging it is assumed that vehicles are connected to the grid for a longer period of time and therefore do not need to be charged as quickly.
As with the DC charging capacity, the value shown is an estimate and is subject to uncertainties that increase throughout the year.
